How to get altitude on values to create deeper connections

This week’s show is with Daniel Fox, author and speaker, Daniel teaches leaders how to influence their audience by understanding their values. Drawing on his tenure as founder and CEO of a successful online retailer and 14 years of leadership in business and coaching, Daniel presents keynotes and workshops on business growth, transformational leadership, and team performance. He helps driven executives and entrepreneurs channel their passions into personal legacies, and community evolution all over the world.

In this show, we spoke about how worldviews (or value-stages) are hierarchical, from survival and tribal views to post modern and beyond. We explored what each value-stage is about, how to understand and bridge the gap with people who are at each stage, how to lead and communicate with them with the aim of creating unity and empathy and ultimately the changes and expansion we want to see in the world.

This is especially relevant at this time, when many people are experiencing safety and security needs and are therefore going to be more present to lower levels on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and are therefore at a lower value-stage at the moment.

If you’re anyone who wants to create more meaningful, intimate connection with (especially if you’re any kind of leader or change-worker) being present to other’s current value-stage will make us so much more effective at meeting them where they’re at.

I’d love to know what YOU think about this week’s show. Let’s carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

  • Recognising that each value-stage has its own gifts and makes complete sense according to the needs of the people at that stage helps us to be more empathic and connected to others, regardless of them having a different value-stage to us.

  • Discerning how effective different views are is critical in solving big problems in the world today. If we’re at the POST-MODERN worldview, we’ll likely have it that all views are equal. If we were to ask a question like “Who holds a more effective way to handle climate change – the CEO of BP, or Greenpeace?” We can see that it’s helpful to be able to discern between the utility of different views according to the problem we’re aiming to solve.

  • Daniel shared how he describes shadow, in this sense, to mean “unintegrated lessons from a previous value-stage (worldview)” so for example, someone at a PROGRESSIVE stage could have shadow (unintegrated values) at the previous MODERN stage. . . and they end up rejecting science and entrepreneurship, instead of building on it. We can go back and reclaim the gifts from shadow an earlier stage, by going back to remember and forgive whatever judgements or traumas we had, so we can have access to those values again for ourselves.
