Beyond Submission
by Lian Brook-Tyler
In The Rose Quest, we are working with the principle of Receptivity, through the portal of the archetypal Temple Priestess.
If one has spent time in the realms of polarity and Masculine & Feminine energetics, the idea of Feminine submission will be very familiar, and perhaps the notion that it is the truest or highest expression of the Feminine, or even of a woman.
Whilst entering an initiation with submission can be an incredibly potent, and yet counterintuitive, dynamic to illuminate the places we have innocently hidden our power, if we are truly devoted to our soul’s evolution, it is important to know that submission is not the highest expression of the Feminine.
In the mystical tradition of the Kabbalah, the Divine Feminine is the domain of the sefirot Binah, which we might call the Great Mother or the Goddess.
She is the womb, the chalice, the void… The one who receives.
She receives the lance of the Divine Masculine, Chokmah, and births all of creation.
She brings life into form.
She makes matter.
(Although I have expressed this using Kabbalistic terms, I could have left out the words Binah and Chockmah, and I suspect you may still have felt the truth of it.)
We can project and overlay all kinds of other archetypal energies onto this, and some would be right… perhaps Demeter’s devotion, Kaliesque killing, or ideas such as oracular knowing or submission… But first, it’s important to understand that at its heart, the Feminine is the overflowing grail of reception and creation (and therefore destruction too).
Coming back to the work of Receptivity, at first glance it can seem more appealing and easier than the notion of Submission, however our soul gnows what it is calling us into, and our ego will revolt just as fiercely, and perhaps even more so, or it might do that in more subtle subconscious ways that we are unaware are even happening (which only serves to make them more effective).
Although I have begun talking about this from a perspective of the Divine Feminine, this is not just for women (that’s simply who I am guiding in this work in The Rose Quest, in a particular way), and we will enter initiations into Receptivity long before we’re ready to be granted passage into the rare metaphysical heights of the Goddess, though many will fantasise otherwise.
There’s much more to say on this that is beyond the scope of this piece, for now I’ll share a little personal snippet which might begin to illuminate the true power of Receptivity (and which also illustrates how guided we are)… I have been consciously in the work of Receptivity for many years, long before I devoted to the Kabbalah - I only found out after I did so that the word Kabbalah itself means variously “reception” or “to receive”, and it is the work, path and map of Unity (which also just happens to be my soul’s calling). In short, it could be said that Receptivity is the path to Unity.
The invitation into Receptivity can bring up the previously hidden, deep wounding and conditioning that screams or whispers that it’s not safe, fair, wanted, or welcome.
Receptivity is one of the most challenging of the invitations the Divine makes to us on our soul path, it won’t come for every person in every lifetime, but when it does, it is one to honour as it’s a rare and precious call to union... which means our soul came here for that.
If that’s you, you have all my love and blessings as you journey on your soul’s mythical quest,
Lian
