How we banish Fox Woman… and the price we all pay for doing so 🦊
By Lian Brook-Tyler
For the past few weeks, Fox spirit has been calling for me to work with it.
The constant messages from Fox, culminated in me taking the “wrong” route home on Friday and finding a dead fox on my path.
Side note: I was leaving an audio message to a fellow shaman at the time, so my exclamation of “Oh! I’ve got to go, Fox has been showing up for me for the past few weeks – I’ve just seen a dead fox on the road and I need to pick it up!” was met with complete understanding and “#shamanproblems”.
Yesterday, I buried the fox in a ceremony and was guided to keep its tail.
It smells so much.
I know my work with Fox now is not only spiritually, but also physically in the preservation of its tail and what that will ask of me.
To give this more context: as a lifelong veggie and a vegan of 26 years who has the deepest bond with and reverence for animals imaginable, the way I’m continually asked to work with the dead (sometimes broken, sometimes rotting and maggot-filled) bodies of animals, far more it seems than any of my peers are, is one of the most gruelling aspects of shamanism for me.
I was talking about the fox and the smell to a wise friend, he sent me the story of The Hunter and Fox Woman (told gorgeously by the magical story teller Martin Shaw, I’ll put a link below.)
The short version of the fairytale is that there’s a lonely Hunter who is graced by the unexpected arrival of Fox Woman.
Her love, her nurturing and her mystery radiate goodness into his life.
They live in bliss… for a while.
But little by little, the pungent smell of her pelt hanging in the hallway enters his whole being and he can stand it no more and tells her so.
He asks her to put the pelt outside.
The story ends with Fox Woman leaving and taking her pelt with her, all signs of her are gone.
They say that to this day the Hunter can be seen standing in the doorway of his hut, lonely in his whole body for the scent of Fox Woman.
But it isn’t just the hunter who stands lonely in his whole body.
It’s all of us.
And we will remain lonely – disconnected and disenchanted – until we reclaim the wild magic of the Feminine and welcome Fox Woman back.
I was asked yesterday if I would create a deeper version of Waking The Wild Feminine this year, focused on embodying the Feminine polarity in relationships.
This is the heartbreaking legacy of the Hunter and Fox Woman…. They show us that true Union between men and women can only be created in welcoming the *full* wild magic of the Feminine.
And in doing so, we can not make the Hunter wrong.
The man is calling to be honoured, his provision is calling to be appreciated, and his wounds are calling for love and understanding.
It is time for our loneliness to end and for us to re-member our ancient birthright of enchanted union.
♥️
P.S. you can register your interest HERE if this work is calling you. You can probably already tell it will be far from easy… that fear will stop you if it’s meant to and it won’t if it’s not.
